Position description

The UCM Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center (UROC) is seeking Graduate Research Mentors (payroll title of Teaching Assistant) to work from May 27, 2025 through August 18, 2025 (summer session D). Graduate Research Mentors offer mentoring and tutorial services to undergraduate students who are part of UROC’s Summer Undergraduate Research Institute.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) is designed to introduce undergraduate students to academic research by conducting a faculty-mentored research project in their discipline over the course of nine weeks during the summer. SURI participants also attend weekly workshops for graduate school and career preparation, professional development, and a weekly seminar/tutorial with the graduate mentors to develop skills and receive feedback on their graduate school preparation. Students develop their skills to better understand their purpose at a research university and become familiar with research in their discipline. At the end of SURI, students present their research project at UC Merced’s Annual Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.

UROC is seeking up to 10 Graduate Research Mentors for Summer 2025. Graduate Research Mentor activities may include:

Conduct group tutorial sessions, including workshops on writing research abstracts, writing personal statements and CVs, sharing your research, creating oral and poster presentations, writing for research, text and content analysis, coding and data analysis, dissecting journal articles, preparing for graduate school and other research opportunities. The mentors also conduct individual meetings with program participants to work on research, writing, communication skills, and creating an individual academic plan to pursue graduate studies.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

UC Merced enrolled graduate student
Completed a minimum of one year of graduate school at UC Merced by May 30, 2025.
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Making normal progress toward the graduate degree as outlined by Graduate Division/departmental guidelines.
Able to work 20 hours per week in-person for the duration of the appointment.

Preferred qualifications

Demonstrated intention to graduate from a PhD program.
At least two years of graduate school at UC Merced by May 30, 2025.
Sincere interest in working with and assisting undergraduate students, particularly those who are interested in a research/academic career.
