Position description

The UC Merced Community and Labor Center seeks an Academic Coordinator II with a background in labor and labor law. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Academic Coordinator II will oversee curriculum development, trainings, and database management for the center’s educational initiatives. The academic coordinator will assess program and constituency needs; and liaise with state and local public agencies, labor unions and central labor councils, and local non-profit organizations learning to support workers.

I. Coordination of Academic Programs (65%)

The Academic Coordinator II will participate in academic program planning and development for a wide range of educational initiatives, including (but not limited to) any or all of the following: the California Workplace Outreach Project, the Worker Resource Center, Safety Protections in Occupation Tool, and Labor Summer. Activities will include:

Liaising with multiple collaboratives, including campus faculty, researchers, staff and students; and off-campus stakeholders, such as Cal/OSHA, local departments of public health, and community, labor and environmental organizations to assess the needs of the campus and region for research and education on labor law.

Developing an academic research and education program focused on the field of law and society, worker rights issues that engages with the needs of the campus and the region, and to the extent necessary, contributing to the development of funding proposals.

Supervising training and developmental activities for center faculty, staff and researchers to learn and maintain programmatic and subject matter competence in the field of labor (e.g. workplace health and safety, wage and hour measures), and particularly as it relates to rural workers (e.g. the California Heat Standard, Wildfire Standard, and avian flu education and outreach).

Supervising coordinators of public programs (if applicable) in preparing and delivering standardized community education trainings, on state labor protections and on the effective representation of workers (such as case management), tailored to the needs of local organizations with low-wage, unemployed, and underemployed workers in the region.

Supervising research specialists (if applicable) in identifying public data sources for social scientific and legal research on conditions affecting San Joaquin Valley low-wage workers and residents.

II. Professional Competence and Activity (5%)

The Academic Coordinator II will have membership in one or more scholarly associations with a focus on labor and law. The Academic Coordinator II will collaborate with center faculty and other campus academics in the development of research projects, working papers, publications, and funding opportunities to advance the intellectual and scholarly missions of the Community and Labor Center, any programs engaged with the Worker Resource Center, and UC Merced.

III. University and Public Service (30%)

The Academic Coordinator II will represent the UC Merced Community and Labor Center/ Worker Resource Center in public education in the fields of labor, and law and society. The Academic Coordinator II will maintain ongoing public education for community-based organizations, worker organizations, and the general public.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

J.D. law degree or equivalent
Minimum of eight years of work experience in law

Preferred qualifications

Twelve years of experience in law
Expertise in labor law
Experience conducting public education with low-income workers and residents
Experience convening community-based organizations
Experience working with labor unions
