Position description

The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Merced, invites applications for a Junior Specialist position beginning July 1st, 2024. The successful candidate is expected to be a senior undergraduate student and will be engaged in research on the study of Chaotic Hamiltonian systems through the use of Geometric Numerical Integrators under the supervision of Dr. Andy Wan.

The Junior Specialist will contribute in original research on the design and implementation of novel geometric numerical integrators to study Lyapunov exponent estimation for chaotic Hamiltonian systems. The Junior Specialist will also be involved in the theoretical analysis of the results and as well as implementation of efficient, reproducible and open-sourced code. Moreover, the candidate is expected to disseminate research results and relevant literature to Dr. Wan's research group and be involved in writing and editing a research manuscript to be submitted for publication by the end of the summer.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

Bachelor's degree in mathematics, physics or related field of study; or equivalent research experience that includes the following:

  • Strong background in linear algebra, differential equations and numerical methods
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Background in programming in open-sourced environment
Additional qualifications
  • Completed at least three year of undergraduate studies but no more than four years
  • Strong background in dynamical systems and classical mechanics
  • Experience in typing scientific reports using LaTeX
Preferred qualifications
  • Programming experience in Python/Jupyter Notebook and GitHub
  • Strong mathematical background in topology, real analysis and/or functional analysis
  • Additional background/experience in classical mechanics, chaotic systems and computation of Lyapunov exponents and Poincare sections
