The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California. The University opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified lab specialist to (a) synthesize 3D hierarchical porous carbon-based structures for energy storage and conversion and to (b) train and supervise the undergraduate and graduate students. The candidate is expected to be proficient in the experimental and analytical procedures carried out in the laboratory, stay on top of current developments and opportunities in the field of electrocatalysis and electrochemical energy storage, train and supervise the students in the safe and proper use of laboratory instruments and write scientific reports/papers. Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent scientific research successfully and have accredited mentoring skills are highly desirable.

A master’s degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field with five to ten years of experience demonstrating expertise in relevant specialty prior to starting the position is required. A Ph.D. degree is highly desirable. An appointee should have a record of academic accomplishment including published or in-press research in the field, and a demonstrated record of University and/or public service. Additionally, appointee will participate in planning and execution of research. Travels to collaborative UCSC campus and National Lab User Facilities are required occasionally.
A successful candidate should also have:
1) Advanced understanding of electrochemistry, and be well versed in the use of spectroscopic and microscopic material characterization methods to understand relationships between structure and properties;
2) Extensive experience in nanomaterial synthesis;
3) Strong written and verbal communication skills;
4) Strong laboratory managerial and report/paper preparation skills.
