Position description

The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The School of Engineering anticipates hiring teaching assistants for Summer 2017 and Academic Year (AY) 17-18 in the following disciplines:
Bioengineering
Computer Science and Engineering
Engineering Fundamentals (courses may include the following: Introduction to Materials, Statics and Dynamics, Circuit Theory, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Strength of Materials, Spatial Analysis, etc.)
Environmental Engineering
Materials Science and Engineering
Mechanical Engineering

The Teaching Assistant (TA) will be responsible for conducting assigned laboratory and/or discussion sections. Additional responsibilities include attending lecture, lab and TA meetings; proctoring all exams related to the course, grading assignments, scheduling at least two fixed office hours per week, and other instructional related duties in support of the supervising instructor.
The University of California Teaching Assistants are represented by the UAW-AFL-CIO.

Qualifications (must meet all listed qualifications):
-Bachelor's degree in the subject area or a related field
-Maintenance of a qualifying grade point average
-Academically eligible to hold the appointment (per UC Merced's Graduate Advisor Handbook)
-Must be a registered UC Merced graduate student in full-time residence (registered for 12 units per term appointed; for summer appointment registered in 12 units in previous term; incoming students for summer appointment have submitted the Statement of Intent to Register).

Salary is based on an annual full-time salary of $40,102.00. TAs will not be appointed for more than 50% time during the Fall & Spring semesters.
