Position description

The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California. The University opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The School of Engineering is proud of its faculty’s accomplishments and our rapid growth. Over the past five years, undergraduate and graduate enrollments have grown by 65 percent. The School currently has 49 faculty members, 1,400 undergraduates, and over 140 graduate students. The campus opened a new Science and Engineering Building in 2014 and will begin to undertake a massive building program that will more than double the campus building areas beginning in 2017.

UC Merced invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Geospatial Analysis and Remote Sensing at the Assistant Professor rank. We seek scholars who can contribute to the interdisciplinary research environment at UC Merced. We are particularly interested in individuals with interests and expertise in geospatial analysis, geographic information science, and/or remote sensing as it applies to problems in environmental engineering, environmental sustainability, and/or food-energy-water nexus. Exceptional candidates in other innovative and relevant application areas, such as geomatics, modern photogrammetry, and/or spatial data infrastructure, are also encouraged to apply, but the expectation is that the candidate will teach geospatial analysis and modeling, and remote sensing at the undergraduate and graduate level within an environmental engineering curriculum. Competitive candidates will have interest in identifying with existing programs, particularly interdisciplinary programs in sustainability-related areas, not limited to the Environmental Systems Graduate Group (http://es.ucmerced.edu), the Sierra Nevada Research Institute (http://snri.ucmerced.edu/), UC Water (http://ucwater.org/) and/or UC Solar (http://cast.ucmerced.edu/).

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in one of the academic fields of civil and/or environmental engineering, environmental science, environmental remote sensing, GIScience, geoinformatics, geography or a closely related field, are required. Demonstrated or strong potential for excellence in scholarship, demonstrated or strong potential for excellence in teaching of diverse populations is also required. Postdoctoral or teaching experience is preferred. Appointments will be effective July, 2017, or later.

Deadline: Positions are open until filled; consideration of applications will begin on December 1, 2016. Applications must be submitted via the website, and must include (1) a cover letter stating area of interest, (2) curriculum vitae (3) research statement, (4) teaching statement, (5) diversity statement, and (6) names of five references with contact information, including mailing address, phone number, and email address. Letters of reference are not required at this time.
