Position description

The University of California is creating a dynamic new university campus and campus community in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university built in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced will be providing new educational opportunities at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels through three academic schools Engineering; Natural Sciences; and, Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts.

The School of Engineering at the University of California Merced invites applications for a qualified Assistant Teaching Professor to coordinate and teach the Professional Seminar and Engineering Capstone Design courses, as well as potentially offer upper division technical elective courses in the area of design.

The job title is also known as Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (LPSOE). This series parallels that of the research-focused series but with emphasis upon excellence in teaching and other instruction-related activities. Individuals in the position are expected to provide outstanding teaching, as well as to engage in professional activity (including research on pedagogy) and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university. This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and, contingent upon promotion, tenure-paralleling security of employment.

Qualifications: Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. degree in an Engineering field by the start of the hire date. Ideal candidates will have at least two years of professional engineering experience and a professional engineering license (PE) which will provide the experience to advise students as they prepare to become professional engineers.

Preferred candidates will: (1) be enthusiastic about working with UC Merced's diverse student body, (2) have demonstrated project management or organizational skills and be comfortable advising students on industrial career paths, entrepreneurship and graduate school, (3) have teaching experience or evidence of the ability to teach, particularly using student focused or student success centered approaches, and (4) be interested in pushing the design thinking and design experience forward with our capstone courses for 21st century curriculum.
