Position description

The University of California, Merced is creating a dynamic new university campus and campus community in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university built in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced will be providing new educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The School of Natural Sciences anticipates hiring teaching assistants for Academic Year 2016-2017, including Summer Session 2016, in the following disciplines: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth Systems Science, Mathematics, and Physics.

The Teaching Assistant (TA) will be responsible for conducting assigned laboratory and/or discussion sections. Additional responsibilities include attending lecture, lab and TA meetings; proctoring all exams related to the course, grading homework, scheduling at least two fixed office hours per week and other instructional related duties in support of the supervising instructor.

The University of California Teaching Assistants are represented by the UAW-AFL-CIO.

Bachelor of Science degree is required. Must be a registered UC Merced graduate student in full-time residence. Maintenance of a qualifying grade-point average is also required. Must meet all requirements outlined in the Graduate Advisor's Handbook.

Salary is based on an annual full-time salary of $38,559.00. TAs will not be appointed for more than 50% time during the Fall & Spring semesters.
