Position description

The University of California is creating a dynamic new university campus and campus community in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university built in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced will be providing new educational opportunities at the undergraduate, masters and doctoral levels through three academic schools Engineering; Natural Sciences; and, Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts.

The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts invites applications from exceptional scholars for a faculty position in Sociology at the Assistant Professor level (tenure-track). We are interested in applicants whose research will contribute to our existing strengths in social inequality (race, class, gender and sexuality), social institutions (e.g., education, health), and politics (social movements, public policy); and who have an excellent record of publication. Preference will be given to those who have the ability to teach graduate statistics. In addition, we are interested in applicants with a history of and/or commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented groups. UC Merced is building a dynamic and high-quality Sociology faculty and we seek an outstanding scholar to assist with training graduate students in our new PhD program.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Sociology or a related field at the time of appointment.
