Position description

The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The Merritt Writing Program seeks to hire full and part-time experienced teachers of composition, ESL, technical or science writing, writing in the disciplines or professions, and related fields. Of particular interest are candidates with experience working with first-generation students and English language learners. All Merritt Writing Program appointments staff lower and upper-division writing courses, including required composition courses and writing intensive sections of required general education courses. Full-time Lecturers in the Merritt Writing Program teach five courses annually with section enrollment capped at 20 students.

Qualifications: Instructors will have a record of teaching excellence that demonstrates broad experience working with students of different abilities, ethnic backgrounds, and educational attainment, including international or immigrant students; a record of scholarly achievement that is pertinent to the teaching of writing preferred as is familiarity with general education curricula. Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree desired. Full and part-time appointments are available. Full-time Lecturers hired in this national search will receive one year contracts with possibility of renewal. Salary is based on an annual rate of $49,012.

This is a limited-term appointment which falls under the purview of the agreement for the Lecturers Unit between University of California and the American Federation of Teachers.
