The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Merced invites applications for one new tenure-track Assistant Teaching Professor starting July 1, 2023.
An Assistant Teaching Professor is a tenure-track faculty position with emphasis on undergraduate education. Candidates with expertise in any areas of Chemistry and Biochemistry are encouraged to apply. The primary focus of this position is teaching lower division chemistry courses using modern, student-centered pedagogies. The successful candidate should be knowledgeable about evidence-based pedagogical and assessment methods as well as creative and resourceful with respect to developing instructional initiatives. If it is of interest, there is a vibrant and supportive community of Teaching Professors in the sciences who are active in discipline-based educational research.

Therefore, the successful candidate will clearly articulate an understanding of the barriers facing students from groups historically excluded from STEM, as well as ways to leverage innovative teaching practices to reduce gaps among students from different backgrounds.
Responsibilities for the position include:
Teach a variety of chemistry courses and laboratory classes, with emphasis on lower-division courses. The expected teaching responsibility for this position is approximately five courses/labs per academic year.
Engage in, and collaborate on, curriculum and program development, pedagogical innovation, and other scholarly and professional activities, such as educational research.
Train teaching assistants.
Develop and assess innovative pedagogy. Pursue external funding for such efforts.
Participate in education-related committees and outreach efforts.
