Salary range: Salary is based on University of California Academic Salary Pay Scales.
Percent time: 100%
Anticipated start: August 2022
Position duration: 12 months

Position description

On behalf of the UC Merced Community and Labor Center, the Junior Specialist will conduct social science or environmental research on issues related to the San Joaquin Valley region’s low-income workers and residents, and the environment. Under the supervision of Paul Almeida, Professor of Sociology, UC Merced Community and Labor Center, the junior specialist will: conduct data collection; analyze data; and develop inventories of community characteristics.

Key Responsibilities

Research, Data Collection, and Analysis and Writing (100%)

  1. Develop an inventory of low-income census tracts, and their most pressing environmental hazards and problems, and climate vulnerabilities
  2. Support data collection and analysis of community environmental needs surveys
  3. Develop a catalog of grants, and granting agencies targeted to low-income communities
  4. Attend trainings, workshops and webinars on climate, environment, health, and equity
  5. Participate in community workshops on funding opportunities for environmental justice and green jobs
  6. Participate in community capacity building workshops on climate planning and grant writing
  7. Conduct supervised research on issue areas relevant to San Joaquin Valley community-based organizations, labor organizations, and environmental organizations.
  8. Collect and code quantitative data (e.g. American Community Survey data) on issues faced by the San Joaquin Valley’s low-income residents and workers.
  9. Collect and code qualitative data (e.g. interview data) on issues faced by the San Joaquin Valley’s low-income residents and workers.
  10. Analyze data concerning community, labor, and environmental issues.
  11. Participate in the writing of a series of eight policy briefs that examine COVID-19 spread and policies, and offer policy recommendations.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a social science. (Required)
Experience conducting qualitative interviews. (Required)
Experience analyzing public information sources. (Required)
Experience with evaluation. (Required)

Additional qualifications

Ability to construct and manage large data sets. (Recommended)
Ability to classify and categorize different kinds of grant and funding opportunities. (Recommended)
Proven systematic organizational skills to a) work independently with minimal supervision, b) determine workload priorities and tasks to complete work in a timely manner, and c) identify and resolve problems. (Recommended)
Willingness to learn how to communicate, write and edit with strong attention to detail and quality control, for scholars and practitioners in the field of labor studies. (Recommended)
