Position duration: This is a full-time appointment until September 31, 2022, with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Position description

The Health Sciences Research Institute at the University of California-Merced is looking to hire an Assistant Project Scientist step 1 to help with research into the mechanisms of alcohol’s effects on behavior in Drosophila melanogaster in the Wolf Laboratory.

The Assistant Project Scientist appointment will require work to be done under the supervision of Dr. Fred Wolf at the University of California, Merced. Research includes creating novel transgenic Drosophila strains through genetic crosses, and the testing of the progengy for their behavioral responses when given alcohol. Other duties will be assistance in the writing of a manuscript describing the results of these new experiments in conjunction with previously completed research on the same subject. The newly recruited scientist will be expected to participate in lab related events including weekly lab meetings.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

A Ph.D. in neurosciences, molecular and cell biology, or a related area, strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, excellent attention to detail, experience with Drosophila melanogaster genetics and care, lastly data management skills.

Preferred qualifications

Prior experience with alcohol behavioral analysis in Drosophila
