Position overview

Position title: Lecturer
Salary range: A reasonable estimate for an initial appointment is $64,329. See Unit 18 Lecturer table for the salary range for this position. These are academic year appointments and subject to the normal processes of academic review. Salary is prorated in accordance instructional workload calculation.
Anticipated start: July 1, 2022
Position duration: Full time and part time positions available. Three courses in Fall and three courses in Spring are equivalent to full time position.
Part time varies based on need and availability.

Position description

Candidates internal to the UCM Department of Bioengineering who had an appointment in 2021-2022 and submit materials by the “Initial Review Date” of March 22, 2022 will be considered prior to all external applicants.

The School of Engineering anticipates hiring full and part-time lecturers positions to teach the following courses in Bioengineering for AY
2022-2023:

Cell Biology for Engineers (Fall 2022): Introduction to cell biology from bioengineering perspective. Focuses on the fundamental concepts of modern cell biology and their biomedical and bioengineering applications. Introduces fundamental principles of molecular cell biology and provides related biotechnology concepts.

Biomolecular Engineering (Fall 2022): Focuses on the analysis and design of custom biomolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, and macromolecular complexes. Students will learn the fundamentals of biomolecular structure and function, the experimental and computational tools/approaches for engineering biomolecules and their application to solving pressing problems in biotechnology, medicine and bioengineering.

Biochemistry for Engineers (Spring 2023): Characterization of the macromolecules of life from structural and functional standpoints. Explores fundamental concepts of biomolecular structure and function, the properties of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates, the mechanisms for their assembly and function, and the tools/approaches used in their isolation and characterization.

Other courses as needed

In addition to teaching the course(s), the instructor is responsible for creating/updating a syllabus, holding weekly office hours (minimum 2 hours/week), and grading examinations and/or papers. The instructor may also be required to hold discussion sections or supervise a graduate student teaching assistant or reader.

This is a limited-term appointment which falls under the purview of the agreement for the Lecturers Unit between University of California and the American Federation of Teachers. Advanced degree in Bioengineering or related field (Biotechnology, Biology and Biochemistry).
