Position description

The University of California, Merced is seeking a Post-Doctoral Scholar who will be the Project Director (PD) for the new San Joaquin Valley Center for Community Air Assessment and Injustice Reduction (SJV CC-AIR). The Center is funded by the California Department of Justice and will (1) work with communities to better understand exposures and health impacts from air pollution emitted by vehicles; (2) support outreach and education with communities disproportionately exposed to air pollution; and (3) inform policies to reduce air pollution exposures and improve public health.

Specific activities include development of a mobile air quality laboratory and health assessment clinic that can be used to monitor air quality, conduct health assessments, and provide a platform for community engagement; strengthening citizen-science based air monitoring networks in the San Joaquin Valley, including the distribution of ~125 Purple Air particulate matter monitors; examining the correlation of more extensive citizen-science air monitoring network data with limited government regulatory air monitoring data; and working with county health departments to evaluate the real-time association of air quality with hospital emergency department visits.

Responsibilities: The Project Director will be involved in all study activities but will take the lead on building and deploying the mobile laboratory (including any necessary licensing, if required) and managing all related field activities. The Project Director will also work with community groups to deploy the Purple Air monitors. Other Project Director activities will include coordinating Center meetings, tracking progress on individual projects, coordinating data management activities and statistical analyses, managing human subject (IRB) activities, and helping organize a UC Merced-hosted conference on air quality at the end of the funding period. The Project Director will also have the opportunity to analyze data and may be first- or co-author on publications. The Project Director will work closely with Dr. Bradman and other Center investigators and community partners who will support the PD and ensure successful completion of planned activities.
