Position description

On behalf of the UC Merced Community and Labor Center, the Assistant Specialist will conduct
social science or legal research on COVID-19 and health policy issues in the San Joaquin Valley region. Under the supervision of the principal investigator, the assistant specialist will conduct data collection; analyze data; write papers; and engage in public service.

Key Responsibilities include:
Research, Data Collection, Analysis, Writing and Professional Competence (75%)

  1. Conduct research on COVID-19 and health policy issues relevant to the San Joaquin Valley.
  2. Collect and code quantitative data (e.g. American Community Survey data) on COVID-19 and health policy issues in the San Joaquin Valley.
  3. Collect and code qualitative data (e.g. interview data) on COVID-19 and health policy issues in the San Joaquin Valley.
  4. Analyze data concerning COVID-19 and health policy issues in the San Joaquin Valley.
  5. Participate in the writing of issue-based fact sheets, research briefs and/or reports.
  6. Create and deliver presentations on research.
  7. The specialist will submit work and attend scholarly conferences in the field of labor studies or public health.

Public Service (25%)

  1. Liaise with public agencies and San Joaquin Valley community-based organizations on issues related to COVID-19 and health policy.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Master's Degree in public health or a social science-related field; or five to ten years of experience; or a law degree.

Additional qualifications

Proven systematic organizational skills to a) work independently with minimal supervision, b) determine workload priorities and tasks to complete work in a timely manner, and c) identify and resolve problems.

Preferred qualifications

Ability to communicate, write and edit with strong attention to detail and quality control, for scholarly, policy, and popular audiences.

Demonstrated written, oral, and visual communication skills to translate data and policy issues into easy-to-understand policy recommendations.
