Position description

The Teacher Preparation Program in UC Merced Extension Education Programs invites qualified applicants to apply for University Mentors of Teacher Candidates, for the academic year 2021/2022.

We seek applicants who have expertise in the areas of teaching linguistically and culturally diverse students and in mentoring or supervising teachers or teacher candidates. The number of positions varies each year, depending on instructional need. These are part-time, contract positions, appointed per semester. Reappointment, if any, is based solely on instructional need.

Supervisors are expected to provide high quality mentorship and supervision according to California Commission on Teaching Credentialing and program requirements, and submit reports and required documentation according to deadlines.

Specifically, the Supervisor of Teacher Education is responsible for the following:

• Attend Teacher Preparation Program mentor meetings as scheduled, usually two per semester;
• Attend a scheduled orientation and training event;
• Conduct a minimum of six (6) observations of classroom instruction per teacher candidate during public school hours, typically during morning hours;
• Complete, collect, and submit all required documents for student teaching according to program deadlines;
• Conduct weekly communication with candidates in person, by phone, video conference, and/or via e-mail;
• May contribute to placement of candidates in approved local school districts;
• Contributes to orientation with mentor teachers and principals about teacher education program requirements and maintains ongoing communication with district personnel throughout the candidate’s placement;
• Maintains current knowledge of effective supervision approaches, such as cognitive coaching, adult learning theory, and current content-specific pedagogy and instructional practices; and,
• Communicates with Education Programs Director, Teacher Preparation Program Associate Director, and Credential Analyst to address student questions and concerns.

Job Location: TK-12 School sites in Merced and within a 50 mile driving distance.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

Required: A valid California Clear Credential, a minimum of five years teaching experience in the content area of the teacher candidate being supervised and have recent professional experiences in school settings where the curriculum aligns with the California’s adopted content standards and frameworks.
