In collaboration with faculty and graduate students in Chemistry, Peer Learning Assistants (PLA) provide academic support for students in chemistry (CHEM) discussion sections and/or in the Chemistry Center. PLAs serve as social and intellectual role models through work in classroom and center activities. PLAs may be assigned either or both classroom and center hours, depending on experience and program need. Through small group and individual support, PLAs increase chemistry proficiency by assisting students in finding their own answers and learn to solve problems independently. PLAs are responsible for creating an inclusive learning environment with support focused on reinforcement of course material.
In their role as peer leaders in Chemistry course discussion sections, PLAs will led small group exercises intended to support student learning, complementing the instruction provided by the instructor and graduate TA.
In the Chemistry Center (chemcenter.ucmerced.edu), PLAs provide academic support for students enrolled in CHEM 1, 2, 8, 10 and 100 through individual and small group tutoring and workshops. Tutors are responsible for participating in day-to-day operations of the center – including checking in students and maintaining the space. Tutors are also required to mentor new tutors and adhere to staff policies and procedures. PLAs are required to participate in mandatory training and regular staff meetings.
