The School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts (SSHA) seeks a Director of the Merritt Writing Program, with an associated tenured appointment in Writing Studies. This position is faculty-administrative, with primary responsibilities for program management as well as strategic vision. The administrative appointment will be part of SSHA with a five-year comprehensive review process. A successful candidate should have significant experience in writing program administration, professional activity in writing studies, a tangible commitment to diversity, experience with student-centered pedagogy and assessment, a strong record of teaching and mentorship, and interest and/or experience with grants and budgets. Associated scholarly activity is inclusive of subfields within Writing Studies; the faculty appointment is located with the Global Arts, Media and Writing Studies department. Depending on qualifications, this tenured appointment could be at the associate or full professor-level (with teaching or research in emphasis). Our interdisciplinary department and programmatic context offer significant opportunities to continue to develop a distinctive, high-quality and comprehensive academic program.

Priorities for this hire include:

  • A strong record of maintaining writing studies as an academic program, particularly in mentorship and leadership
  • A commitment to developing a comprehensive writing program and associated academic planning
  • Experience with course and program assessment
  • Demonstrable interest in obtaining external funding

In order to be considered, candidates must have a terminal degree (EdD, MFA or PhD) in Rhetoric, Composition, or a relevant field by the position start date; comprehensive related administrative experience for at least two years, at least five years of effective and related teaching experience; and two writing samples.

The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2020.
