The Geospatial Energy Resources and Life Cycle Assessment (GERLCA) Lab at the University of California, Merced seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in sustainable energy life cycle assessment (LCA). A primary responsibility during the first several months of this position is integration of life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis (TEA) models for forest residue bioenergy pathways with collaborators across institutions who are TEA experts. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for research with Dr. Marie-Odile Fortier on a variety of life cycle assessment projects across renewable energy systems, bioenergy systems, mining for energy metals, and climate change mitigation strategies, and involving geospatial modeling of life cycle climate change impacts. This postdoctoral position will involve both performing new research and participation in ongoing research projects under the supervision of Dr. Fortier.
The Postdoctoral Scholar will be expected to: perform research and coordinate publication efforts with collaborators on an existing grant on integrated LCA/TEA of forest biomass energy pathways; perform original research collaboratively and independently; attend and participate in research group meetings; assist with the completion of ongoing projects with coauthorship credit; assist with mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; participate in grant proposal writing efforts; publish manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals; present research at conferences; assist in the setup of Dr. Fortier’s new computational lab; and maintain and build knowledge of the current scientific literature. The Postdoctoral Scholar will also be expected to set and communicate their schedule to Dr. Fortier. This will include being physically present on the UC Merced main campus for at least half of their working hours, while still being expected to work on research-related efforts for the GERLCA lab full time.
Qualifications: Applicant must have obtained a PhD in an engineering, sustainability, or energy-related field. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Previous experience with life cycle assessment and sustainable energy systems research is required. The successful candidate will have previous training and evidence of building a publication record in life cycle assessment. Experience in GIS, bioenergy research, coding in Python, techno-economic analysis, statistics, and/or interdisciplinary collaboration is preferred but not required.
