A Postdoctoral Scholar position is immediately available in the Functional Nanomaterials Lab led by Dr. Jennifer Lu. The successful candidate will perform synthesis and characterization of small molecule model systems and corresponding polymers for creating a thermal contracting polymer platform [e.g. Nature Chemistry, 2013, 5, 1035, Macromolecules, 51(4), 1377-1385, 2018]. Successful outcomes can lead to technological exploration in soft robotics, thermal waste harvesting and enabling the development of zero expansion electronic packaging materials.
It is expected that he/she will stay abreast of recent developments in the field, develop research ideas and write research papers in a timely manner. Mentoring graduate students and undergraduate students who will work on relevant projects is required. It is also his/her responsibility to maintain some of the lab instruments and ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety requirements. This project is partially supported by our industrial collaborators. The appointed scholars will have ample opportunities to interact with scientists at national laboratories and researchers from industrial sponsors.
Qualifications: Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. in organic chemistry or polymer chemistry or a related field. The candidate also should have experience in the following technical areas: Extensive research experience in 1) organic synthesis, 2) Knowledge in polymer synthesis and 3) Be well versed in spectroscopic characterization techniques. Highly self-motivated individuals who have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent scientific research successfully are desirable. Strong written and verbal communication skills are also required. Some knowledge in polymer characterization such as thermal analysis can be beneficial to the project.
