UC Merced is also building the Downtown Campus Center, a $33 million, three-story administrative building in the heart of Merced.

The Department of History & Critical Race and Ethnic studies, which delivers two distinct undergraduate majors in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts is hiring Historian of Asia and/or a Critical Race and Ethnic Studies scholar(s) for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Department seeks Historians with teaching interests in Asia who could offer courses that may include but not limited to:

Urban East Asia
China in the Ancient World
The Silk Road
Topics courses in World History

We also seek Critical Race and Ethnic Studies Scholars who are qualified to teach but are not limited to:

Race, Gender, and Sexuality
Comparative Immigration
Race and the Media
Race, Law and Civil Rights
Critical Refugee Studies

The Department will give preference to Historians of Asia or Critical Race and Ethnic Studies scholars who can also teach a lower division course addressing the history of the United States, particularly with an emphasis on gender, sexuality, and/or race, either as a survey or a more topically focused class that meets departmental guidelines for lower divisions courses.

In addition to teaching the course(s), the instructor is responsible for creating a syllabus, holding weekly office hours (2 hours/week), and grading examinations and/or papers. The instructor may also be required to hold discussion sections or supervise a graduate student teaching assistant.

Masters and/or PhD and experience teaching at the college or university level are required. Must be able to provide a record of excellence in teaching.

This is a limited-term appointment which falls under the purview of the agreement for the Lecturers Unit between University of California and the American Federation of Teachers. Salary is based on an annual full time rate of $54,738.00.

Full time and part time positions available. Three courses in Fall and three courses in Spring are equivalent to full time position. Part time varies based on need and availability.
