UC Merced is also building the Downtown Campus Center, a $33 million, three-story administrative building in the heart of Merced.

We are looking for a self-motivated, creative, and highly qualified postdoctoral researcher to join our highly collaborative and interdisciplinary group working on bio-inspired organic electronic materials. Our research areas include bio-inspired conjugated polymers, structural metamaterials, resin development for 3D printing, hierarchically structured multi-functional, stimuli-responsive composite materials. Experiences with organic synthesis and characterization, mechanical and electrical characterization, rheology, electron microscopy, and synchrotron scattering will be particularly helpful.

The successful candidate will perform polymer synthesis, develop photochemistry for SLA/DLP-based 3D printing, and carry out chemical, optical, mechanical and rheological characterizations. There will be periodic trips to the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource for synchrotron experiments.

Applicants must have obtained a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field prior to starting the position. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required. Graduate student mentoring will also be an important component of the job. Preference will be given to applicants with strong background in one or more of the following areas: (1) organic or polymer synthesis, (2) chemical characterization, (3) mechanical and rheological characterization, (4) set-up building, especially those pertaining to 3D printing.
