The biological physics and soft matter theory group at the University of California, Merced Department of Physics invites applications for two open postdoctoral positions, to begin in Summer or Fall 2019. The available positions are to work primarily with Professor Daniel Beller and with Professor Kinjal Dasbiswas, respectively, in the research areas described below. The successful candidates will join a vibrant and collaborative community of theoretical biophysics/soft matter research groups, and will have ample opportunities to also collaborate with Professors Ajay Gopinathan and Kevin Mitchell.
Simulations and continuum theories of active liquid crystals, with a focus on chaotic flow fields, topological defects, pattern formation, and rheology. This position is to work primarily with Daniel Beller. The project will develop models for experimental systems of microtubule suspensions, bacterial swarms, and related phenomena in active colloids. Other interests of this PI include population dynamics and elasticity-mediated self-assembly in soft matter.
Simulations and continuum theories of biological active matter, including cell and tissue mechanics, complex and adaptive matter of biological origin such as cytoskeletal and extra-cellular proteins, and mechano-chemical modeling of experiments in biophysics and cell biology. This position is to work primarily with Kinjal Dasbiswas. Other interests of this PI include liquid crystals, charged soft matter and topological mechanics.
Qualifications include a PhD, completed or imminent, either in any area of physics or in a closely related discipline pertaining to biological and soft matter systems, by the start date of the position. Experience with computational modeling is preferred.
