Position description

The University of California, Merced, is the newest of the University of California system’s 10 campuses and the first American research university built in the 21st century. With more than 7,500 undergraduate and graduate students, UC Merced offers an environment that combines a commitment to diversity, inclusion, collaboration and professional development. With bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs, strong research and academic partnerships, and community involvement, the UC Merced campus is continually evolving and requires talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers, management and staff.

Ranked among the best public universities in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, UC Merced is uniquely equipped to provide educational opportunities to highly qualified students from the San Joaquin Valley and throughout California. The campus enjoys a special connection with nearby Yosemite National Park, is on the cutting edge of sustainability in construction and design, and supports the economic development of Merced and the region.

In Fall 2016, UC Merced broke ground on a $1.3 billion public-private partnership that is unprecedented in higher education. The Merced 2020 Project will nearly double the physical capacity of the campus by 2020, enhancing academic distinction, student success and research excellence. UC Merced has also built the Downtown Campus Center, a $33 million, three-story administrative building in the heart of Merced.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California Merced invites applications for a qualified Assistant Teaching Professor to coordinate and teach courses in Civil Engineering, including core courses such as 1) structural analysis/green buildings, 2) design and lab courses in sustainable structures, 3) engineering fundamentals (i.e. Statics and Dynamics, Strengths of Materials, and Engineering Economics), beginning in the 2019-20 academic year. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is proud of its faculty’s accomplishments and our rapid growth. The Department currently has 15 faculty members, 103 undergraduates and about 60 graduate students.

The job title is also known as Lecturer with Potential Security of Employment (LPSOE). This series parallels that of the research-focused series but with emphasis upon excellence in teaching and other instruction-related activities. Individuals in the position are expected to provide outstanding teaching, as well as engage in professional activity (including research on pedagogy) and service related to the pedagogical mission of the School and university. This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and, contingent upon promotion, tenure-paralleling security of employment.

Interested candidates will: (1) be enthusiastic about working with UC Merced's diverse student body, (2) have demonstrated project management or organizational skills and be comfortable advising students on industrial career paths, entrepreneurship and graduate school, (3) have teaching experience or evidence of the ability to teach, particularly using student focused or student success centered approaches, (4) be interested in pushing design thinking and experience forward with our Civil Engineering courses for 21st century curriculum, and (5) we are particularly interested in attracting academically and culturally diverse candidates, especially those who can contribute to the growing diversity and excellence of the community through their teaching, scholarship, and service.

Candidates are expected to have a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a related field by the start date. Preferred candidates will have at least two years of prior experience.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by November 30, 2018. Applications will continue to be received until the position is filled. Interested applicants are required to submit 1) a cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) statement of research, 4) statement of teaching, 5) diversity statement, and (6) three letters of reference submitted online. After an application is submitted, the letters of reference should be electronically uploaded by the letter writers (instructions will be provided by the application system). For inquiries and questions, please contact Professor Abbas Ghassemi at aghassemi2@ucmerced.edu.

Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and UC academic salary scales.

Guidance on what to include in a diversity statement may be found here.

The University of California, Merced is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of diversity among its faculty, students and staff. The University is supportive of dual career couples.
