Context
The University of California, Merced is a dynamic new university campus in Merced, California, which opened in September 2005 as the tenth campus of the University of California and the first American research university in the 21st century. In keeping with the mission of the University to provide teaching, research and public service of the highest quality, UC Merced offers research-centered and student-oriented educational opportunities at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels through three academic schools: Engineering, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences/Humanities/Arts.

The UC Merced Library meets the diverse research, teaching, and public service needs of UC Merced researchers by providing targeted, quality collections, and relevant services that effectively and efficiently support the research lifecycle of finding, using, creating, and managing information. The Library seats approximately 1000 people and is housed within the Kolligian Library building, a 100,000 square foot facility that contains multiple campus departments in addition to the library.

Position Summary
The goal of the Instruction Librarian is to foster the development of information literacy in the UC Merced environment through instruction, reference, and outreach.

Primary Duties
• Collaborates with faculty, programs, and campus partners to develop students’ information literacy skills.
• Designs and teaches in-person library research instruction to equip students with information literacy skills
• Develops and implements best practices for creating LibGuides and reusable learning objects
• Creates and updates teaching materials and tools in support of instruction and reference needs
• Prepares and implements assessment strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of library instruction on student learning
• Shares with colleagues expertise around instructional methods and the scholarship of teaching & learning with colleagues
• Provides reference services for students, faculty, and staff both in-person, and digitally
• Contributes to and participates in outreach events to effectively communicate and promote library services and resources
• Participates as a library liaison to communicate library services to faculty

Secondary Duties
• Creates and contributes content for library outreach and communications
• Identifies and investigates technology tools for delivery of instruction
• Serves on UC systemwide and UC Merced campus committees as appropriate.
• Participates in appropriate professional-development activities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
• MS/MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program or equivalent experience or advanced degree in information science or related field
• A minimum of three years’ teaching experience
• Ability to independently plan, deliver, and assess instruction sessions
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills
• Takes initiative and shows flexibility
• Experience with using technology for instructional purposes

Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students and faculty
• Experience providing reference, especially digital reference
• Experience embedding information literacy into curriculum
• Familiarity with learning management systems
• Knowledge of the instructional design process
